John D'Angelico (1905-1964) was an American luthier known for his archtop guitars and mandolins. In 1932, he founded D'Angelico Guitars and began producing archtop guitars for jazz and big band musicians. His Excel model was a later design, which was smaller than D'Angelico's original styles. Guitarist Chet Atkins played a D'Angelico Excel before his sponsorship with Gretsch.
