Stevie Ray Vaughan (1954-1990) was an American blues guitarist who, despite his short career, became one of the most influential blues musicians of the late-20th century. Vaughan and his backing band, Double Trouble, played a combination of blues, rock and roll, and jazz, inspired by greats such as Jimi Hendrix, Albert King, and Django Reinhardt. Vaughan and Double Trouble released four albums, including 1989's In Step, featuring his most popular single "Crossfire." Vaughan died in a helicopter crash following a performance in Wisconsin on August 27, 1990. He was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.

This guitar was built by Fender Custom Shop Master Builder Mark Kendrick. It is modeled after one of Vaughan's favorite guitars, which he affectionally named "Lenny" after his wife, Lenora. Vaughan found the original Lenny, a 1965 Fender Stratocaster, at a pawn shop in 1980. The guitar had been refinished in red with its original sunburst finish still visible and its tail piece was replaced with a 1910 mandolin inlay. Vaughan immediately wanted the guitar, but could not afford its $300 asking price. Lenora collected money from friends, and gifted the guitar to him as a birthday present.
