The Beatles' 1963 single "I Want To Hold Your Hand" received gold certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) to commemorate the sale of more than one million copies on February 3, 1964.

The "I Want To Hold Your Hand" award is considered the first white matte 45 RPM record award. The RIAA medallion was most likely used from the remaining stock of RIAA walnut award materials as the RIAA transitioned from the walnut awards to the white matte format around this time. Later white matte awards feature acid etched RIAA logos.
