Roger McGuinn (b. 1942) is an American musician best known as a founding member and frontman of the Byrds. McGuinn is known for playing a 12-string Rickenbacker guitar, and its jangly sound along with his harmonizing vocals lent themselves to the formation of the folk rock genre - influencing many artists of the late 1960s and early 1970s. The Byrds went through several lineup changes, and over the course of its existence the band featured musicians such as McGuinn, David Crosby, Gene Clark, Michael Clarke, and Gram Parsons. McGuinn later recorded 10 solo albums and had several collaborations with Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Chris Hillman. As a member of the Byrds, McGuinn was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991.

When not using a 12-string Rickenbacker, McGuinn was known to use 12-string Martins like this guitar. In 1999, McGuinn and Martin announced this signature guitar in 1999 with production beginning in 2000.
