1963 Gibson Everly Brothers Flattop
Brothers Don (1937-2021) and Phil (1939-2014) Everly came from a musical family, performing as The Everly Family with their parents in the 1940s. The brothers struck out on their own in 1956 as The Everly Brothers, where their combination of acoustic guitar playing and harmonized vocals proved immediately popular. Hits like "Wake Up Little Susie," "All I Have to Do is Dream," and "Cathy's Clown" defined the 1950s rock and roll and country landscapes. During their nearly six-decade career The Everly Brothers amassed 35 Billboard Top 100 singles. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's inaugural class of 1986 and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001. The Everly Brothers served as influences for many future musicians, including The Beatles and The Beach Boys.
From 1962 to 1972, Gibson partnered with The Everly Brothers to produce the Gibson Everly Brothers Flattop guitar. The Everly Brothers played these guitars live and in studio throughout the 1960s. Other famous artists such as Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Bob Dylan were known to use these guitars. In the 1980ls, Gibson produced a reissue of this guitar as the "Everly Brothers" J-180.
