Their debut self-titled album was released in 1978 featuring the song "Sultans of Swing," which went double-platinum. Dire Straits continued to record throughout the 1980s, with hits like "Romeo and Juliet," "Telegraph Road," and "Money for Nothing." Dire Straits broke up in 1995, and Knopfler embarked on a solo career releasing 10 albums as of 2024.

Knopfler is left handed, but plays guitar in a right-handed setup with his signature fingerpicking style.
