Gibson introduced the solid body Chet Atkins SST model in 1987 with production ending in 2006. The guitar was designed by Chet Atkins, famous for creating the "Nashville sound" in country music. The guitar is unique in that it does not have a sound hole, but produced acoustic sound from a bridge mounted transducer. The guitar was popular for its ability to produce high volume levels with no feedback, and was used by musicians such as Waylon Jennings, Dave Matthews, David Gilmour, and Steve Earle.
